A birdhouse gourd woodburned with a flock of birds and leather dyed yellow on a blue background. This birdhouse is a working birdhouse on it's second year. Last summer a male House Wren built a nest of sticks inside. It did not take up residence but chose to raise it's family in a small hanging wooden house nearby instead. This year it is out again with a new paint job. A layer of saw dust has been put in the bottom of the gourd for freshness and in the hopes of attracting Black-capped Chicadees.

East Sunflower Birdhouse

A working gourd birdhouse on the east side of the yard decorated with a large sunflower.
This gourd decorated with a large sunflower was put outside on the east side of the house and saw action almost right away. House Wrens seem to love these gourd houses. I made three of these birdhouses this year and every one of them saw action. In two of them babywrens were successfuly raised and in the third nesting material was brought inside but this male either did not find a female or the female chose another house. Acrylics were used to paint the sunflower, wood stain was rubbed into the gourd suface and lots of coats of polyurethane were used all over protect the gourd from rain, mold and sun .
